You Don’t Get to Decide

When someone tells you that you hurt them, you don’t get to decide that you didn’t.” Louis C.K.

Today’s quote expresses profound but simple wisdom. We live in a very subjective world, and sometimes our individual perspectives overshadow the viewpoint of others. If we want to be stewards of healthy relationships, if someone we care about says that we hurt them, it is our work first to understand and acknowledge that hurt, and then to GO OUT OF OUR WAY, to understand or make an amend.

‘Going out of our way’ is usually the only way to get to the viewpoint of others, and seeing the issue from their perspective is the whole point.

Next time someone tells you that you have hurt them and you are struggling to understand why- agree to meet them in that back alley called ‘ out of your way’. Knowing and understanding someone else’s ‘Why’ can make all the difference in the world.
